We use Westerly Yachts, not the less sea-kindly modern lightwieghts favoured by many other schools. Both are fully coded to MCA/RYA standards for operation in the Plymouth area and across the Channel.
One vessel is a ketch, the other a sloop. Both Gypsy Moth IV & Lively Lady, the first two single-handed round the world yachts of Sir Francis Chichester and Sir Alec Rose are ketches. A ketch can give a flexibility of sail set not found on a sloop.
We offer RYA Training - both Practical and Theory Courses.

OWN BOAT INSTUCTION
This is the most popular, and most sensible. If not possible, the school has MCA - coded motor cruisers available.
INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCE (ICC)
This is a very popular course. We train for the Craft up to 24 meters in length. the certificate is required when visiting the coastal waterways of Europe. For the inland waters, the Code European des Voies de la Navigation Interieure (CEVNI) is also needed.
POWERBOAT (RIB) INSTRUCTION
For the level 1, level 2, Intermediate, and advanced certificates.
DIESEL ENGINE INSTRUCTION
A 1-day course.
VHF/SRC INSTRUCTION
On how to operate VHF fitted with Digital Selective Calling. A 1-day course which can be arranged in many different places, and /or in association with the Lymington Town Sailing Club.

Plas Menai is the National Watersports Centre and enjoys a magnificent location on the banks of the Menai Strait, overlooking Anglesey in North Wales. The waters of the Strait are ideal for sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and powerboating with easy access to the open sea and coastal scenery.
Cruise the uncluttered waters around the North Wales and Anglesey Coastline, the Irish Sea, across to the Isle of Man, down the Llyn Peninsular or up to Scotland.

The centre also runs the RYA Dinghy Sailing syllabus from Learn to Sail through to Dinghy and Senior Instructor courses.
Powerboat Courses at the centre include;
RYA National Powerboat Level 2, Intermediate and Advanced Powerboat Training, Powerboat Instructor and Advanced Powerboat instructor.
Long-term instructors training courses are also available providing a gateway into the watersports industry.
The staff at Plas Menai hold some of the highest technical and coaching awards available and include; RYA Dinghy Coach Assessors, RYA Racing Coaches, RYA Powerboat Trainers, RYA Windsurfing Trainers, RYA Yachtmaster Examiners, BC Level 5 Sea and Inland Coaches, Mountain Instructors with SPA and ML, White Water Rescue Providers and First Aid Trainers.
Our award-winning centre was designed with comfort in mind and retains a friendly, warm and inviting atmosphere. The centre can accommodate up to 67 people and the bedrooms are comfortable with single beds and duvets. Most rooms are twin-bedded, although we do have a few single rooms and some with three or four beds for families and groups. All rooms are en-suite, with fitted wardrobes, tea and coffee making facilities and a television.

Our motto is sailing made simple, and as far as the theory of navigation and seamanship is concerned that is our aim. Whether you prefer power or sail our courses provide an easy step by step way to learn. With a Tiller course you can also be assured that all material is current. RYA coursework is updated annually, and we continuously revise our courses to incorporate these and other changes. Our administration and support packages are unparalleled ? we?ll help you plan your study, allocate you a tutor and give you access to our online student resources free of charge. This means you can download and work directly on your course material, check for course updates, look up answers to problems you?ve encountered, and review the status of your coursework and the grades you?ve achieved.
Convenient though all this is, it shouldn?t and doesn?t replace human contact: we have a helpline available to all students by phone or email. What?s more, you?re welcome to visit us and have exercises and exams marked on demand at no extra charge; and we?re happy to discuss and arrange personal tuition. Some may call us old fashioned for still labelling our products as correspondence courses but that is what we do. We correspond with our students many of whom we regard as our pen pals around the World.
Our courses cover all the RYA theory from Basic Navigation and Safety to Yachtmaster Ocean with a handy multi course package combining the Day Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore courses giving a saving of 10% on the combined cost. Savings can also be made by studying in groups of two or more with each additional student saving about 15% on the cost of the basic course.
Finally we also teach First Aid and VHF/SRC at our base in Guildford, Surrey but can travel to clubs or groups by arrangement.

SELF-SUFFICIENCY
New technology masks the importance of personal skills in prediction. Forecasts sometimes differ, predicted progress of weather systems vary and selecting from the wealth of information is difficult. Technology can go wrong (usually at crucial times!) and no public forecasts predict all events at the mesoscale - the area in which most of us do our sailing.
LEARNING MATERIAL
The course includes: a fully illustrated learning pack with note-taking boxes adjacent to each subject laminated identification cards of weather features for on deck predictions a pre-course pack covering fundamental principles, illustrations and recommended reading.
