Skip Novak, born in 1952 is now based in South Africa. He is best known for his participation in four Whitbread Round the World Yacht Races including navigating the British Cutter KINGS LEGEND to 2nd place in 1977/78, skippering Simon Le Bon?s DRUM to 3rd place in 1985/86 and skippering the Soviet entry FAZISI in 1989/90. From 1997 to 2001 he worked with Bruno Peyron on THE RACE project, culminating in co-skippering the 110 foot maxi cat INNNOVATION EXPLORER to 2nd place in the non stop millennium circumnavigation.

Wishing to combine his mountaineering skills (New Zealand and the Alps, expeditions to East Africa, Sikkim, Nepal, Patagonia, South Georgia and Antarctica) with sailing he built the 54 foot expedition yacht PELAGIC in Southampton in 1987 and has since spent 20 seasons in Antarctic waters, fifteen of which were leading combined climbing and filming projects based from the vessel. The flagship 74 foot PELAGIC AUSTRALIS was built in 2003 to meet the demands of this niche adventure travel business.

The Pelagic fleet of two specialist expedition sailing vessels is available for expedition charter to high latitude destinations in both hemispheres. A concept rather than simply sailing vessels, Skip Novak's Pelagics are designed and built specifically to operate in remote areas on long term projects. Both vessels have lifting keels and are specially adapted for operating in ice conditions.

Both Pelagics are suitable for: Climbing Project Support, Scientific Field Research, Adventure Sailing Cruises, Wildlife Cruises, Dive Excursions, Film Making Support, Gap Year Adventures and via annual deliveries post season building sea time and experience for RYA students. If your project is off the trade routes, Pelagic can suit your needs All Seasons - All Oceans.

For their work in Antarctica, Pelagic Expeditions applies for a UK Foreign Office Permit under the Antarctic Act and are members of IAATO (International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators).
